Many
organizations today pay attention to environmental concerns, and maintenance
departments can make useful contributions. Well-maintained equipment operates
efficiently, without wasting energy. Well-maintained furnaces burn more
cleanly. Well-maintained doors and windows leak less heat. Well-maintained
machinery doesn't have to be replaced as often, thereby reducing the size of
scrap-heaps and the materials that manufacturers have to use to build
replacements.
All
of this is common sense, but coming up with hard numbers is often difficult.
Exactly how much energy can good maintenance save? That's a question many
maintenance departments would like to answer—if you can prove to upper
management that better maintenance makes your company greener, that fact might
be remembered at budget time.
So
we're sure that many of our NewsWire readers have been looking into this
question: what tangible environmental effects can good maintenance provide?
Have you improved energy use or reduced waste by keeping equipment in good
condition? If you have a good story (especially one with solid facts and
figures), we'd love to hear from you at info@mainboss.com. We'll share
the best in future issues of the newsletter, so that all our readers can
benefit from your experience.
When you upgraded to MainBoss 2.9 Update 5, you may have noticed a new option in the Administration menu: Export XML. While this new functionality has no effect on how you currently use MainBoss, it’s still important to know what XML is and when it can be used.
XML stands for “Extensible
Markup Language” and is defined in Webopedia
as follows: “[XML] allows designers
to create their own customized tags, enabling the definition, transmission,
validation, and interpretation of data between applications and between
organizations.”
In other words, XML is a way of representing data so that it can be shared by different computer systems. In particular, XML can be used to transfer data between programs or from one computer to another.
In MainBoss, Export XML will let you transfer your MainBoss 2.9 data to the forthcoming MainBoss 3.0. The two versions use different types of database, so it’s necessary to transfer your existing data to the new database format (one that uses Microsoft SQL Server 2005).
The XML export function will help you migrate to future versions of MainBoss. You may not have an immediate use for the XML function but now you at least know what it is!
