How anti-virus software can affect MainBoss
Many
companies have anti-virus programs installed, which run in the background,
checking files for viruses and other problems. While these virus checkers are
important when computers are connected to a network or the Internet, they can
also affect the performance of other programs installed on the computer.
Recently a MainBoss customer had contacted MainBoss technical support,
complaining that MainBoss was running extremely slow when more than one person
was logged into MainBoss. They have the most up-to-date version of MainBoss,
powerful new computers, a brand new server dedicated just to MainBoss, and a
very fast network connection. After running several tests, it was realized that
the company’s virus program was in fact causing MainBoss to run slowly. The
anti-virus software, even though it was running in the background, was taking
up so much of the computer network’s resources that the speed of operating
MainBoss was affected considerably. After the customer disabled their
anti-virus software, MainBoss was running fast, regardless of how many users
were logged into the program.
Another
instance occurred recently when a MainBoss customer was forced to reindex the database
several times a day in order to fix recurring error messages within the
MainBoss program. During the process of creating a work order from a work
request sent into the MainBoss database by MainBoss @Requests, and then
clicking on Save&Print, an error was caused in MainBoss: “not a correct
index file”. Reindexing would temporarily fix the problem but it was not until
they stopped their anti-virus program from scanning the MainBoss data files
that the error ceased to occur.
An
anti-virus program is a useful and necessary tool but just because the user
cannot see it operating doesn’t mean it can’t affect the performance of the
computer, the network, and other programs.
If your company is experiencing problems similar to the ones mentioned
above, checking your anti-virus program may be an option for troubleshooting
the problem. Many anti-virus programs warn about excluding database files from
the anti-virus scan. Make sure you check with your supplier for details.

2. Do you know: How to quickly enter new contacts into MainBoss and MainBoss @Requests
If you are using MainBoss @Requests in conjunction with MainBoss CMMS, there is an easy way to enter new requestors into both programs. As long as the ‘Everybody’ account in MainBoss @Requests is enabled, new users simply need to send an email to the @Requests email address. An entry for that user will be created within the @Requests program and within the Contacts table of your MainBoss database. You then just need to edit the new records in the Contacts table to add other information such as phone number, address, and so on.
