Feedback on bar coding and PDA interfaces
MainBoss is currently researching the possibility of adding bar coding functionality and/or a PDA interface to our CMMS software package. Bar coding allows users to enter information by scanning in codes with a bar code reader, rather than typing in the information by hand. A PDA is a handheld device (i.e. Palm Pilot, Blackberry, etc) to which certain aspects of the MainBoss program could be downloaded, such as work orders, work requests, or inventory information. This would allow users to view MainBoss data away from their workstations.
In order to gauge how much interest there is for these types of add-on programs, we invite all customers, dealers, as well as potential customers and dealers to provide us with feedback. Please take a moment to read through the following questions and either fax (519-895-1864) or email (daniela@mainboss.com) your answers to head office.
What type of functions would you like to use bar coding for?
What type of MainBoss data would you like to see available on a PDA device?
Would you be interested in purchasing the hardware necessary for either the bar coding or the PDA interface from us?
MainBoss is considering language independent bar code procedures for invoking MainBoss processes, using keyboard/wedge based bar code readers. The following is an example of a possible process that could be performed through bar coding:
Physical Counting
of Inventory
1.
Have the
physical count report sheet print bar codes for the inventory items in addition
to the boxes for entry of counts.
2. Have a MainBoss barcode procedure whereby one scans the procedure code (perhaps printed at the top of the physical count sheet), followed by the item bar code. This invokes the Physical Count Adjustment editor, positions the cursor in the COUNT field, fills in the building/storeroom/location (from the bar code identifying this as part of the 'physical count' procedure), and allows the user to enter the count from the paper.
3. Close the count window and go to step 1 for the next item on the sheet.
Questions:
Is this how you would envision using a bar
code reader with respect to MainBoss?
How else would you do the above task with a
bar code reader?
Can you see doing other common MainBoss
procedures with a bar code reader?
We appreciate your time and contribution and with your input, we hope to develop an innovative new version of MainBoss based on your needs and the latest technological advances.
