1. Materials in Transit

Workers often carry materials with them...especially when the workers drive trucks or other vehicles. Occasionally, it might be important to know when a part is on a truck—if you need a particular part in a hurry, it’s nice for MainBoss to be able to tell you, “Joe has one of those in his truck.”

The obvious solution is to treat trucks as storerooms. In MainBoss Advanced, you might create a special Location record called “In Transit”. Under this location, you can create Storeroom records for each truck. When you put materials onto a truck, you record this as a transfer to a storeroom; when these materials are used on a job, you record it as a usage from the truck “storeroom.”

In this way, not only do you know what’s in your storerooms, you also know what’s in your trucks. That way, MainBoss has a complete picture of where your materials are.

2. Worker Re-Certification

In many trades, workers must be re-certified from time to time. This may be required by local laws, by union agreements, or by company policy. For example, electricians may need to take occasional refresher courses or to pass some sort of examination.

How do you keep track of when workers need to be re-certified?  In both MainBoss Basic and MainBoss Advanced, simply set up a “preventive maintenance” schedule!

For example, in MainBoss Advanced, you could create a special unit record corresponding to a worker who occasionally needs to be re-certified. Create a task record that describes the re-certification process (e.g. enrolling in a class or taking a test), and assign the worker to that task. Create a maintenance timing record that indicates the schedule for re-certification (e.g. every five years). Finally, put them all together with a unit maintenance plan whose scheduling basis has been set to indicate the last time the worker was certified.

When re-certification comes due, MainBoss will automatically create a work order which assigns that worker to the job of re-certifying.  Simple!
